Celebrate Pi Day with Learning Upgrade!

March 14 (3/14) is celebrated around the world as Pi Day, a day dedicated to the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter and begins with the digits 3.14, which is why the date 3/14 is used to celebrate it.

For teachers and adult education instructors, Pi Day offers a perfect opportunity to bring math concepts to life in a fun and engaging way. Students can explore geometry, measurement, and real-world applications of math while participating in hands-on activities and interactive learning.

To help celebrate, we’ve created a new Pi Day video from the Upgradors team that teachers can easily share with students in K-12 classrooms, adult education programs, tutoring centers, or homeschooling environments.

Why Pi Day Is Valuable for Math Learning

Pi is more than just a number students memorize. It appears in formulas used across mathematics, science, engineering, and even space exploration. From calculating the size of circular objects to modeling planetary motion, π plays a role in countless real-world applications.

Pi Day celebrations give educators a chance to:

  • Introduce geometry concepts like radius, diameter, and circumference

  • Encourage curiosity and exploration of mathematical patterns

  • Show how math connects to everyday life

  • Break up routine instruction with creative and memorable activities

Across the United States and around the world, teachers celebrate Pi Day with games, experiments, art, and problem-solving activities that make math more engaging for students.

A Simple Pi Day Activity for the Classroom

One of the most effective Pi Day activities is also one of the simplest.

Provide students with several circular objects—such as cups, lids, or paper plates—and ask them to measure the diameter and circumference of each object. When they divide the circumference by the diameter, students will consistently get a value close to 3.14, demonstrating the constant π in a hands-on way.

This activity works well across grade levels and learning environments:

  • Elementary school: Introduce the idea that circles share a mathematical pattern.

  • Middle school: Explore measurement accuracy and decimals.

  • High school: Connect the experiment to formulas involving circles.

  • Adult education: Reinforce numeracy and applied math skills.

Pairing hands-on activities with engaging media can help reinforce concepts and make the lesson more memorable.

Watch the Upgradors Pi Day Video

Our new Upgradors Pi Day video is designed to help students visualize the relationship between circles and π in an entertaining and accessible way.

Teachers can use the video to:

  • Kick off a Pi Day lesson

  • Introduce circle vocabulary

  • Reinforce geometry concepts

  • Provide a fun brain break during math class

The Upgradors characters guide students through the concept of π in a way that feels more like a short story or adventure than a traditional lecture.

Using Learning Upgrade for Math Practice

If you’re already using the Learning Upgrade app, Pi Day is a great opportunity to introduce students to our Math Upgrade courses, which reinforce key math skills through music, interactive lessons, and guided practice.

Students can:

  • Strengthen number sense and measurement skills

  • Practice problem solving through interactive questions

  • Progress at their own pace through structured math courses

Learning Upgrade is used in K-12 schools, adult education programs, libraries, and workforce training programs to support math learning through engaging digital lessons.

Pi Day Across the Curriculum

Pi Day doesn’t have to be limited to math class. Many educators integrate Pi Day into multiple subjects:

Math: Measure circles and calculate π
Science: Explore how π appears in physics and engineering
Language arts: Write “Pi-ku” poems based on the digits of π
Art: Create circle-based designs and geometry art projects

This cross-curricular approach helps students see that math is not an isolated subject but part of a much larger world of ideas.

Make Math Fun and Memorable

Pi Day reminds us that math can be creative, playful, and meaningful. Whether students are measuring circles, watching the Upgradors video, or practicing math skills in Learning Upgrade, the goal is the same: help students build confidence and curiosity in mathematics.

We hope you and your students enjoy celebrating Pi Day!
